Vermont Campus Tour
The Campus
Goodyear Hall houses approximately 167 cadets. The building was named for Major General Conger A. Goodyear, a Norwich trustee and a veteran of both World Wars.
The campus sits on a knoll at the base of Paine Mountain. The Dog River, (a famous New England creek for trout fishing), runs through the back of the property. Because the campus is on a knoll, we use stairs like other people use oxygen. The knoll provides a number of scenic overlooks that spoil those that study and work here.
Jackman Hall is the main administrative building for the campus. It really has become the primary image of the organization, and you will notice its spire on our stationary. Jackman Hall sits at the head of the table, so to speak. It is at the end of a rectangular area known as the Upper Parade Ground. This Parade Ground is surrounded by Dorms, Jackman Hall, and Dewey Hall. The Parade Ground has been the center of activity for the Corps of Cadets since 1841.
Here is Dewey Hall, home of the Division of Business and Management. Dewey Hall is named after Admiral George Dewey, a very famous US Navy Admiral. He is an alum, and he actually laid the cornerstone of the building in 1899 amid much fanfare, gala, and general happiness.
Our Chapel, White Memorial Chapel, is also a common symbol of the university. It sits below the parade ground and is connected at the rear to Harmon Hall.
Harmon Hall houses the student union, the cafeteria, the post office, bookstore, and a grill.
The Math, Science and Engineering Complex graces the lower portion of the campus. Built in 1996, this ultra-modern complex houses the Division of Math/Science and the David Crawford School of Engineering. Norwich University is the oldest private engineering school in the nation.
Centennial Stairs are named as such because they were commissioned and built 100 years after the birth of Norwich University. Each stair is engraved with either the name of a class or the name of a famous alumnus. Leading up to the Upper Parade Ground, it signifies the organization's deep history and tradition for the young cadets and traditional students as well.
By the way, you're only looking at about half of them. At the top of the stairs, Dewey Hall is on the left, Jackman Hall on the right, and the Parade Grounds straight ahead.
Roberts/Crawford Hall houses the Admissions department for the undergraduate programs, a dormitory, and the Milano ballroom. You will see the Milano ballroom when you visit the campus. We'll share some fine cuisine and meet our case-study executives here.
A view of the Parade Grounds - about December 15.
